The Research & Development Operations Lead, will be responsible for maximizing the operating effectiveness of preclinical and clinical research programs, ensuring optimal interactions across functions. The position will be responsible for developing and implementing tools and processes that maximize productivity, optimize our resource utilization and ensure adherence to global regulatory and compliance requirements.  
The role will involve ensuring that our operating model evolves to meet our growth objectives, including organizational design, space planning and change management programs.
A key responsibility will be to support the Portfolio Review process, including preparing templates for use by Project Teams to present key program assumptions, collation and analysis of portfolio data and development of a methodology to support program prioritization.  
Additionally, the position will maintain an up-to-date log of key program milestones, anticipated availability of Spark and competitor data in order to inform Spark news flow.  
The incumbent will be expected to work closely with the CSO in the coordination and preparation of materials for quarterly Scientific Advisory Board meetings, Science & Technology Committee Meetings and the annual R&D Day for investors.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
40% of the time
  • Work closely with R&D leaders to identify areas for improving R&D operational efficiency.  Lead the development and execution of operating systems to improve performance throughout the research and development organization.
20% of the time
  • Support the development of a portfolio management process, including tools and processes for effective program review and prioritization.
10% of the time
  • Track internal and external milestones/anticipated data release to inform Spark news flow and act as the key point of contact for Corporate Communications/Investor Relations
10% of the time
  • Work closely with and support the CSO in preparation of materials for Annual R&D Day and Quarterly Scientific Advisory Board and Science & Technology Committee meetings.  
10% of the time
  • Other assignments as required
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Communication – Excellent communication, analytical, scientific assessment, strategic and presentation skills, including ability to communicate succinctly and effectively to key stakeholders
  • Collaboration – Strong collaborative skills to assure implementation of operations systems across the organization.
  • Analytical rigor – Demonstrated ability to incorporate variety of perspectives (quantitative & qualitative) to inform operations and program management decisions
  • Resourceful – Demonstrated ability to regularly seek out and incorporate well-informed perspectives, both internally and externally, to develop deeper insights
  • Standalone – Ability to work independently and with little formal support to conduct analyses, lead projects and develop recommendations
REQUIREMENTS:
  • College degree in relevant field of study (required)
  • 10+ years of experience in life sciences and biotechnology industry (required), with experience in operations, process improvement and change management (strongly preferred)
  • Experience in the gene therapy field, ideally in a technical or research position (preferred)
  • Proven ability to develop solutions to operational issues in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated track record of working collaboratively and leading people without reporting authority
  • Proven skills at negotiating solutions in complex environments
  • Distinctive communication (oral, written, and presentation), analytical, and strategic thinking skills
  • Superior planning, project management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to audit and optimize processes
